In the aftermath of a tooth extraction, in order to minimize discomfort and timely proper healing, proper aftercare is crucial. We’ve put together a list of tips to promote healing, reduce the risk of complications, and ensure an optimal post-extraction experience.
Post-Tooth Extraction Dos and Don'ts
- Control bleeding – After an extraction, place a clean gauze pad over the extraction site and bite down on it to control bleeding. Replace the gauze as needed until bleeding subsides, which is usually within a few hours.
- Manage swelling and pain – In the first 24 hours after a procedure, apply an ice pack or cold compress to the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling and pain. Also, as necessary and within your dentist’s recommendations, take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication to manage any discomfort.
- Maintain oral hygiene – More than ever, in the immediate aftermath of a tooth extraction, practicing good oral hygiene is essential. Of course, ensure that you’re gentle around the extraction site and avoid brushing the area for at least 24 hours. Also, gently rinse with warm saltwater several times a day to prevent infection.
- Rest – Avoid strenuous activities for a few days after a tooth extraction and focus on allowing yourself time to rest and recover.
- Attend follow-up appointments and follow your dentist's instructions. This seems pretty straightforward but cannot be overstated. Make sure to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments, listen carefully to your dentist’s instructions, and follow them diligently.
What Can I Eat After a Tooth Extraction?
Anyone undergoing a tooth extraction is strongly advised to stick to a diet of soft, non-acidic foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies, soup, or applesauce in the days after the procedure. Conversely, patients are advised against eating hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods, as these can irritate the extraction site.
Additionally, patients are instructed against smoking or drinking through a straw for at least 24-48 hours after the extraction, as either of these can dislodge the blood clot and delay the healing process.
