Why Do I Need a Tooth Removed?
Our goal as dentists is to provide treatments and services so you can keep your teeth for a lifetime. However, there are instances where tooth extraction is the only option that makes sense for the sake of your overall oral health. Some examples are:
- A severely decayed or infected tooth that we can’t treat with a root canal
- An injury has left you with a tooth broken off below the gum line
- Wisdom teeth are creating crowding and need to be removed to protect other teeth
- When preparing for dental implant placement or denture therapy
Our dentist in Arlington has learned that the source of dental anxiety is often a fear of the unknown. Rest assured that Dr. Kim will answer your questions and use visual aids like intraoral photos and digital x-rays to show you what’s happening and why we need to remove the tooth.
Your comfort is our priority, so you'll find soothing amenities like blankets, neck pillows, and TVs in all our treatment rooms. With years of experience behind us, our dental team knows how to ensure that you have a stress-free experience. We also offer conscious sedation and nitrous oxide ( laughing gas) to help you relax.
Do You Need to Remove My Wisdom Teeth?
Our ancient ancestors needed wisdom teeth, but we don't need the extra chewing power in the modern world of processed food. Our jaws have also gotten smaller as we’ve evolved, and wisdom teeth often don’t have sufficient room to erupt properly.
When they emerge, wisdom teeth crowd other teeth and are so far back in the mouth that they’re difficult to clean, which puts you at risk for cavities and gum disease. Since they don't serve a purpose, Dr. Kim often wisdom teeth removal to protect neighboring teeth.
Oral Surgery at Our Arlington, WA Dental Office
Dr. Kim also places dental implants, and it's not painful because we numb the area before we begin. The procedure only takes about an hour, and while you may experience some pressure, you won’t feel any pain.
In some cases, we may need to extract a tooth before we can place the implant. And if you don’t have enough dense jawbone to place the implant, Dr. Kim also performs bone grafts. A bone graft supplements the bone in your jaw, making it possible for you to get an implant in the future.

Panoramic X-Rays
Panoramic x-rays are another method that dentists use for diagnosing problems and planning treatment. Just like the pano image on your phone, panoramic x-rays give us a single continuous image of all your teeth and your jaws.
This overview goes beyond helping us diagnose cavities or gum disease; it gives Dr. Kim a global view of your head and neck to look for abnormalities like tumors or cysts, diagnose TMJ problems, find impacted wisdom teeth, and plan orthodontic treatment.
Nitrous Oxide
With sedation dentistry, including nitrous oxide, there’s no reason ever to experience dental anxiety again. Also called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a gas that’s mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small face mask. As you breathe, you’ll feel a pleasant sensation of well-being and comfort that will last throughout your appointment.
When your procedure’s finished, we turn off the nitrous and switch the flow to pure oxygen. Inhaling oxygen for several minutes afterward helps any drowsy feelings subside so that when you leave us, you’ll feel refreshed and alert enough to drive yourself home safely.
